St. John Lutheran Church
The area around Coryell City was settled in the 1880s by a number of German immigrant families. Desiring to worship in their native language, a group of settlers began meeting together in homes. The Rev. Johannes Barthel of the Luthern Church occassionally conducted services for the settlers. He was succeeded by the Rev. R. Seils, who officially organized St.

Turnersville Cemetery
TURNERSVILLE CEMETERY THIS BURIAL GROUND SERVED RESIDENTS OF THE RURAL COMMUNITY OF TURNERSVILLE (ORIGINALLY BUCHANAN SPRINGS). SETTLED BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR, TURNERSVILLE BOASTED A COTTON GIN, STORES, A SCHOOL, AND THREE CHURCHES BY THE 1880s.
History
Wood Cemetery
This cemetery, probably named for noted pioneer educator D. R. Wood, was established with the 1858 burial of Sarah E. Shipman, wife of prominent local rancher John K. Shipman. More than 20 additional burials were recorded before John Shipman deeded 11.5 acres here for cemetery, church, and school purposes in 1877.
