The Texas State Capitol
Sunset red granite from Granite Mountain near Marble Falls, quarried and hauled down for a building the state could not afford to pay for in money. The deal instead was land: three million acres of the Panhandle, handed to the contractors and turned into the XIT Ranch, at the time the largest fenced cattle ranch in the world. Built between 1882 and 1888 to Elijah E. Myers's design, after fire took the previous capitol in 1881. It stands 302.64 feet to the tip of the Goddess of Liberty's star, which is 14.64 feet above the United States Capitol in Washington and, despite what you will hear, only sixth among the states. Free, self-guided, open daily, and the rotunda floor is worth the walk in on its own.
