This belt of scrubby oak and grass is a genuine transition zone — the band where the eastern forest gives out and the prairie begins, running northeast across Texas between the Piney Woods and the Blackland. The soil is what draws the line: a layer of sand over a dense clay pan that water cannot get through, so the ground is waterlogged after rain and bone dry weeks later, and post oak and blackjack oak are the trees that tolerate both. Fire kept it open as savannah for thousands of years; without it, the oaks close in.
