Texas is the neck of an hourglass for monarch butterflies. Nearly the entire eastern North American population passes through the state twice a year, funneling down in autumn toward a handful of mountain fir forests in Michoacán and coming back north in spring. The insect that leaves Mexico is not the one that reaches Canada — the spring migrants lay eggs on milkweed here in Texas and die, and it takes another two or three generations to complete the trip north. That makes Texas milkweed the hinge the whole migration turns on.
