The low, sharply folded ridges here are a window into rock that is buried everywhere else in Texas. These are Paleozoic sediments, up to about 500 million years old, crumpled when the ancestral North American and South American plates collided to build the Ouachita mountain chain around 300 million years ago. That chain runs underground from Arkansas across Texas and only reaches the surface here and in the Ouachitas of Oklahoma, exposed because a later dome lifted the younger Cretaceous cover off the top of it.
