The Luling-Mexia Fault Zone

Industry & Science·Caldwell County·Texas

A second, older set of faults runs roughly parallel to the Balcones about 30 miles inland, and unlike the Balcones it made people rich. These faults are growth faults, formed as coastal sediments slumped toward the Gulf, and they trap oil against their broken edges. Edgar Davis brought in the Luling field along this trend in 1922 after six dry holes, and the same fault zone runs northeast through Mexia and on toward Talco, marking one oil field after another.
