There is a fault running under this part of Houston, and it does not make earthquakes. Gulf Coast growth faults form as thick piles of sediment slump seaward, and they move by slow creep rather than sudden rupture — the evidence is offset curbs, stepped pavement and a persistent line of cracked foundations rather than anything anyone feels. Lidar surveys have mapped hundreds of these fault traces across the Houston area, and Long Point is the best studied of them, though continuous GPS through the 2010s suggests its movement has slowed to almost nothing.
