The Frio River

Nature·Uvalde County·Texas

Frio means cold, and it earns the name — the river is fed by springs emerging from the Edwards limestone at a steady temperature, so it runs notably colder than the summer air above it. It has cut a canyon into the southern rim of the Edwards Plateau here with bluffs several hundred feet high. Bat Cave nearby holds a maternity colony of Mexican free-tailed bats numbering in the millions, and the evening emergence is visible on weather radar.
