Brownwood was a waterfront neighborhood of several hundred homes that sank into Galveston Bay over about forty years. As nearby industry pumped groundwater the land dropped as much as ten feet, so yards that had been dry became tidal, streets flooded on ordinary high water, and Hurricane Alicia finished it in 1983. The subdivision was bought out and abandoned, and the land that remains is now the Baytown Nature Center — a public marsh and birding area laid out over the street grid of a neighborhood that drowned in place.
