The river drops over a granite ledge here — the falls the town is named for, now under Lake Marble Falls since the dam went in. The stone is not marble but granite from the Llano Uplift, and Granite Mountain a few miles west supplied the roughly 15,000 carloads of pink granite used to build the Texas Capitol, donated by its owners in exchange for the state's labor and a railroad spur. The Colorado runs about 860 miles from the Llano Estacado to Matagorda Bay and shares no water with the Colorado of the Grand Canyon.
