Natural Features in Texas

The Colorado at Columbus

Nature·Colorado County·Texas

The Colorado has cut a deep, tightly curved loop here, and the town sits inside the bend. Rivers on a flat coastal plain normally wander freely, but this one is entrenched — it cut down into older terraces rather than sliding sideways, which is why the meanders are so pronounced and so fixed in place. The bluffs above the channel expose the sands and clays of that older floodplain, and the gravel bars in the river are quartz carried down from the Llano Uplift, hundreds of miles upstream.
