The ground drops away sharply here where the Colorado has undercut a bluff a couple of hundred feet above the river — a rare piece of relief in country that is otherwise long, low rises. The exposure is sandstone and clay of the Eocene, laid down some 40 million years ago when the shoreline of the Gulf stood far inland of where it is now, and the whole belt of similar rock runs northeast across the state parallel to the coast. The height and the view are the reason this bluff was chosen as a burial site in 1848.
