Four North American biological zones overlap here — southeastern swamp, eastern hardwood forest, central plains and southwestern desert — which is why a stand of cypress, an arid sandhill and a carnivorous-plant bog can sit within a mile of each other. Four of the five carnivorous plant types found in North America grow in the Thicket. It was named a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1981, and it survived as wild country largely because the ground was too wet, too tangled and too poor to farm.
