This lake was dug for a war. It was built in 1942 to supply water to the Houston Ship Channel plants making synthetic rubber and steel, and when the industrial need passed it was handed over and allowed to go wild. It is now a state park with a substantial alligator population, and the old rice-field levees inside it are being reworked back into coastal prairie and wetland — a piece of 1940s war infrastructure quietly turning into habitat.
