Rice Fields and the Geese That Followed

Nature·Waller County·Texas

Rice growing on the coastal prairie accidentally replaced the wetland it displaced. Flooded fields and waste grain turned out to suit wintering waterfowl well enough that snow geese and white-fronted geese shifted their wintering grounds inland onto the rice belt through the twentieth century, arriving in numbers the natural prairie had probably never supported. That makes the birds dependent on an agricultural economy — as rice acreage around Katy has fallen to development and water costs, the geese have thinned out with it.
