The Nutria
The large rodent swimming in these ditches with orange front teeth is a nutria, a South American animal that arrived on the Gulf Coast for fur farming in the 1930s and got out — a hurricane and a good many deliberate releases finished the job.

The Trinity Delta at Anahuac
The Trinity River ends here in a delta of freshwater marsh grading into brackish and then salt marsh, and that gradient is what makes the area so productive — most of the shrimp, crab and finfish taken from Galveston Bay spend part of their lives in marsh like this. It is also a wintering ground for enormous numbers of snow and white-fronted geese.
