At about 113 miles, this is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. It is a young landform — built by waves and longshore currents over the last few thousand years — and it is still moving, migrating landward as sea level rises and being cut through and resealed by storms. The shallow lagoon behind it, the Laguna Madre, is one of only about six hypersaline lagoons on earth, saltier than the Gulf because it is barely flushed and evaporates hard.
