Las Moras Springs

History·Kinney County·Texas

One of the largest springs in Texas rises here at the edge of the Edwards Plateau and forms Las Moras Creek. The flow is what put a fort here — the U.S. Army established Fort Clark at the spring in 1852, and it stayed in service through 1946, including as the base for the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts. The spring pool is still used for swimming and the discharge has dropped substantially as regional pumping has increased.
