The largest spring system in Texas, discharging an average of about 290 cubic feet per second from the Edwards Aquifer along the Comal Springs fault, and the source of the Comal River — at roughly two and a half miles, one of the shortest rivers in the country. The springs stopped flowing for about five months during the drought of 1956, the only time in recorded history, and the fountain darter was wiped out here and had to be reintroduced from the San Marcos River. Two species found nowhere else on earth live in the spring openings: the Comal Springs riffle beetle and the Comal Springs dryopid beetle.
