The ground rises several hundred feet over the next few miles as the road climbs off the coastal plain onto the Edwards Plateau. Spanish accounts named the feature — los balcones, the balconies — for exactly this stepped profile seen from below. The escarpment is the reason San Antonio exists where it does: the San Antonio Springs and San Pedro Springs rise along the fault line, and the Spanish sited the presidio and the missions on that water in 1718.
