The oxbow lakes in this bend of the Brazos hold one of the densest concentrations of American alligators in Texas. They are here because the river keeps abandoning its own channel — a meander gets cut off, becomes a still lake, fills with vegetation, and makes close to ideal alligator habitat. The species was listed as endangered in 1967 and recovered well enough to be delisted in 1987, one of the more complete comebacks in American wildlife management.
