The Lost Plat Map

The only known plat map of Washington-on-the-Brazos was destroyed in the Great Storm of 1900, which meant that for more than a century nobody knew with any precision where the vanished town's buildings had stood. The ground was preserved as a park, carrying a replica of Independence Hall and very little else identified on it. That changed with an excavation begun in September 2023, part of a redevelopment of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site that ended up costing fifty seven million dollars. Integrated Environmental Solutions worked from nineteenth century tax records to place buildings approximately, surveyed for subsurface anomalies, then dug along what had been the town's main road. More than two hundred thousand artifacts came out of the ground over two years of work. Among the structures they found was the brick base of a fireplace belonging to Hall and Lott's Tavern, which had fed and lodged travellers coming off the ferry. A separate building gave up a brick floor dating to the late 1830s. An 1831 United States dime and an 1820 Spanish silver coin bearing Ferdinand the Seventh came up in the same work. The site reopened on 8 November 2025 with full size buildings standing where there had been nothing: Sam Houston's presidential office, Rucker's drug store, Hatfield's exchange, a carpentry shop, a blacksmith shop. Hall and Lott's Tavern, whose fireplace had been among the first things found, was the last to be unveiled, in the spring of 2026. It is an unusual case of a town having to be recovered by archaeology in a state whose documentary record is generally excellent, and the reason is one map that happened to be somewhere it could be lost.
